Obituary: Dorothy Eudean Hughes

Dorothy Eudean Hughes was affectionately known as Dos or Dottie to her siblings and cousins, and Aunt Dots, Dos or Dor to many such as the grands, nieces and nephews. To her children she was known as Mar, and to her beloved husband she was known lovingly as Dos.

The Late Dorothy Eudean Hughes
She was born on 7th May 1931 to the late Ellis and Laurel Franklin of South Hill. She was the fifth child of eight children. She was married on 27th January 1954 to James Freddie Hughes. This union produced two sons, Doctors Franklin and Lowell Hughes. Her beloved husband, affectionately known as Freddie, loved his darling wife dearly. She attended the Road Elementary School at the early age of five until standard seven, which was the highest standard at that time. Being an exceptional student, she sat and passed the “Standard Seven Examination”. On that merit she became a Pupil Teacher at that same school, at the age of 15.

Later she attended the Spring Garden’s Teachers Training College, in Antigua, where she qualified as a Trained Assistant Teacher. On her return, she worked at West End Primary School, and later at the Road Primary School where she went on to perform the role of Deputy Head, then known as First Assistant. She moulded and touched the lives of many students who now hold prominent positions both in Anguilla and abroad. They always looked up to her as a role model. After enjoying a successful teaching career, she retired from this, the noblest of professions, at age 55 in 1986.

Dots was an active member of the Bethel congregation from a very tender age. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, chorister, Girls League member, Class leader, convener of the Caring Fund and President of the Bethel’s Women’s League. On May 25th, 2001, she received an award from the Bethel Methodist Church for outstanding contributions to church and community.
Dots was a faithful wife and devoted and loving mother, grand-mother and mother-in-law. She was a caring and loving sister, a devoted aunt and a dear cousin. Her quiet disposition was admired by family members and all whom she came in contact with. Though quiet, Dots was without doubt the matriarch of the family. She leaves to mourn her devoted husband Freddie, two loving and caring sons, Frankie and Lowe, two loving and caring daughters-in-law, her grand-children, two sisters, one brother and many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

A large gathering of family and friends attended the homegoing of Teacher Dorothy Eudean Hughes on Saturday, May 29th, 2010 at the Bethel Methodist Church. We are sure she is safe in the arms of the Lord. Her passing has left a void which no one can ever fill, but her memories will live on in our hearts forever.
May her soul rest in peace.
