Carissa Webster-Lake Graduates As Doctor Of Medicine |

Dr. Carissa Webster-Lake of Long Road, Anguilla, has graduated from Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Webster-Lake, who is the daughter of Zulma Webster and Albert S Lake, attended the Stoney Ground Primary School and the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School from which she graduated in 2002. That same year she matriculated at the University of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas and pursued undergraduate studies in Biology in preparation for Medical School. Carissa had always excelled academically and continued this trend while at UVI.

She received the Barnett Frank Female Sophomore award for achieving a 4.0 during her first year, the VI Rums and EDC scholarships in 2003 and the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship in 2004. She also made the Dean’s List every semester and was inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society.
In 2004, Carissa was 1 of 2 students accepted into Boston University’s Early Medical School Selection Program. She spent the summers after her sophomore, and junior years and her entire senior, at BU taking undergrad and medical school courses and eventually returned to UVI in the spring of 2006 to graduate Magna Cum Laude.
She returned to BU School of Medicine in the fall of 06 to resume her medical studies. She immediately became involved in a number of extracurricular activities in addition to her studies. She was a member of the Student National Medical Association, American Medical Students Association and the Massachusetts Medical Society-Medical Students Section. She also engaged in research activities with hopes of becoming published. After many clinical rotations and an intense process of elimination, she decided during her 3rd year as a medical student that she would pursue a career as a Surgeon.
On May 15 2010, Carissa was 1 of 154 medical students and 1 of 12 black students who graduated Doctor of Medicine. On June 21st 2010, Dr. Webster-Lake will begin her Residency at UConn Health Center in Hartford, Connecticut, where she will train to be a General Surgeon. Upon completion of Residency, she plans to pursue a fellowship in vascular surgery. She has pledged that one day she will return home to serve her people.
Carissa would like to thank her parents, the government of Anguilla, her school friends and some very close family friends, for all their support and she pledges to continue to make you all proud.
