Clark University awarded Monifa a number of credits towards her BA, for courses passed at the CXC’s Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE). As a result she took additional advanced courses, normally taken by students in the University’s Masters programme in Biological Science. This enabled her, in completing the BA degree to also complete all of the coursework for the Master of Arts in Biochemistry.
Monifa, in her third (junior) year, was awarded a tuition scholarship under the University’s “Fifth Year Free Programme” to complete an MA in Biochemistry in the 2010/2011academic year, one year after completing the BA. Because of the number of advanced courses she took, she needs only to complete research on her chosen project, and to submit and defend her thesis on the subject. She intends however to take additional courses, with a view to continuing her studies in Biochemistry beyond the Masters.
Kamau, Monifa’s brother, previously read Biochemistry at Clark University from 1997 to 2002, obtaining a BA and MA in the process.
Monifa is the daughter of Fabian and Verna Fahie. She was the co-recipient of the 2006 Island Scholarship based on her CXC CAPE results.
She is grateful to her parents, teachers and relatives for preparing her well to succeed educationally, and providing her with the values and social skills to be able to adapt, as an international student, to the challenges of university life in the USA and to remain grounded in the process. She is currently on a month long visit home and will be returning to Clark at the beginning of July for an early start on the completion of the MA.
