Obituary: MR. RUSSELL WEBSTER

The death has been announced of Mr. Russell Webster who was a leading figure in the 1967 Anguilla Revolution. He was found dead at his residence at Island Harbour on Sunday evening, after having been seen in the district the day before.

Mr. Webster was among a number of Anguillians awarded a Medal of Honour and a Queen Certificate for their contribution to the freedom movement for separation from St. Kitts-Nevis. He served as a co-opted member of the early Anguilla Council then headed by Revolutionary Leader, James Ronald Webster. He is listed in the island’s archives among the members in a 1970 historic photograph which has been a much-sought after artifact over the years.

The late Russell Webster, who has maintained a low profile in local politics over the years, has also made a considerable contribution to Anguilla in the area of social development. He had operated over the years a supermarket in The Valley, but which was eventually closed. Up to the time of his passing he was the owner of a clothing store also in The Valley and had been involved in other business opportunities on the island.

Mr. Webster was an active and respected citizen who will be greatly missed. He is survived by a number of children and other close relatives to whom The Anguillian offers its condolences.

On Tuesday this week the Anguilla House of Assembly rose in one minute of silence in honour of his passing and remembrance.

The tribute was initiated by the Hon. Chief Minister, Osbourne Fleming. The Leader of Government Business described Mr. Webster: “Truly, Mr. Speaker, these happenings point to us that life is not guaranteed indefinitely, and so I hope this is a lesson to all of us that we do not have time. And so I would like to indulge your approval for us to observe a moment of silence in recognition of his passing,” Mr. Fleming stated.

The Speaker, the Hon. David Carty, gave his approval.
