When the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School begins its new school year in September, 14 students from the Vivien Vanterpool Primary School, at Island Harbour, will be among the new entrants in Campus B.

A new block, an expansion project at the Valley Primary School, accommodating three large kindergarten classrooms, was officially opened on Friday, July 1. The once-stalled building was completed with a contribution of US$175,000 from the Windsong (Anguilla) Foundation.

She graduated from Kingsborough Community College with an A.S in Biology with honors in 2008. While at Kingsborough, she joined the research program at the school and worked closely with her research mentor. She presented her poster at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABCRMS) in California 2006, and also at the Metropolitan Association of College and University Biologists (MACUB) conference in New York 2007. She was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, and also served as a peer mentor.

Having never been a person to contract her boundaries, Nashara Webster, daughter of Celina ‘Princess’ Fleming of Island Harbour, graduated on June 2, 2011, from Trent University in Canada, having completed her Bachelor of Arts degree (Honours) in Economics, with a minor in International Development Studies, in three years rather than four.

Students at the Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in The Quarter, under the guidance of their teachers, attracted much attention when they mounted an exhibition of their work at an open day last week.

Golda Lake, daughter of Evan and Angela Lake and granddaughter of William Hawley, has earned a Masters of Arts degree in Applied Social Psychology, with a concentration in Personal Management, from Ball State University in Indiana. She graduated on May 7, 2011.

Maranatha Methodist Pre-School, the only regular school actually within the Blowing Point community, graduated twelve of its eighteen students on Tuesday evening this week, eight more than the previous year.

The Honourable Minister of Education, Mr Edison Baird attended a meeting at the Anguilla Community College (ACC) last week with a delegation from University of Technology (UTECH) Jamaica to discuss a mutually beneficial partnership between the two institutions.

Approximately six third and fourth form students have taken the opportunity to learn about the Island’s local history from Ms. Lilli Azevedo, a maritime archaeologist living on Anguilla who is researching Anguilla’s heritage for her PhD thesis.

“If the Caribbean is to become globally competitive, all secondary school students should be doing Information Technology.”

On Saturday, November 6, 2010, Anguillian student Ms. Angele D. Richardson proudly walked the stage of National Arena in Kingston, Jamaica, for one of her life’s most memorable events. She graduated from The University of Technology, Jamaica, with First Class Honours, with a Bachelor of Education degree in Family & Consumer Studies - Food & Nutrition.

The Anguilla Community College held its Fifth Annual Certificate Presentation Ceremony under the theme “Nation-building For A Brighter Future” at the Rodney MacArthur Rey Auditorium on Wednesday evening, November 10.

The Comprehensive Learning Centre (CLC), at North Hill, held its 7th Student Award Ceremony at the Rodney MacArthur Rey Auditorium on Thursday, November 4, at which some 95 students were listed on the programme for graduation.

One of the first steps taken so far by the Anguilla Community College in its efforts to move forward, has been the recruitment and part-time appointment of a Director of Adult and Continuing Education, in the person of Mrs. Charmaine Rey-Richardson. Her duties include working with community agencies and developing programmes to meet their needs.

Eleven 6A and 115 Year 5 students graduated from the Albena Lake- Hodge Comprehensive School on Wednesday, October 20. The event was held at the Rodney MacArthur Rey Auditorium.

Caribbean Schools Regional Food and Nutrition Quiz Competition was held on Wednesday and Thursday the 20th and 21st October. Eleven (11) teams from around the region competed in this year’s competition which was held via the Uwidite system at the University of the West Indies Open Campus here in Anguilla and the region. Anguilla progressed easily through round 1 and then onto round 2 where Anguilla competed against Guyana, Turks and Caicos and Jamaica in the semifinals. Anguilla was successful in defeating both Jamaica and Turks and Caicos to compete in the finals against Guyana.

Students in the five houses at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School competed on Wednesday this week in the 5th Annual Health Authority-sponsored quiz, organised by the Nutrition and Health Promotion Department.

Three students of the University of the West Indies Open Campus Anguilla will be travelling to Grenada this week to attend the Graduation Exercise to be held at the Grenada Trade Centre, Grand Anse in St. George on Saturday, October 16th, 2010.
The three graduands are Mrs. Shirlene Hodge who has completed studies in the Bed.
