Whenever I think of Uncle Ned I see a huge guinip tree spreading a million leafy fingers in every direction – fingers which I believe in some way reached out and linked the lives of all of us children who were drawn to that yard. I can remember only once having been actually inside the drawing room of his house. The shade of the guinip tree served every imaginable purpose, from kitchen to doctor’s office.
